Corina Best
one of the groundbreakers of the UK waackin’ scene began her waackin’ journey in 2008 with a curiosity for a street dance style which allowed for femininity in a male dominated culture. She searched for a deep knowledge of the style within the UK and subsequently broadened her research outside of the UK. Her intense research led her to conclude waackin’ was a largely misunderstood style. Determined, she embarked on a quest to bring education and accurate knowledge of the waackin’ dance style to the UK in an effort to bolster the dance scene. Although a founding member of the UK’s first waackin’ crew, Corina felt an inner calling for more, before long she became Shabba-Doo’s apprentice, focusing primarily on Shway-Style (Waackin’ Shabba-Doo’s Way) culminating in a leap of faith move to Los Angeles, California for 3 months May-August 2012 to train intensively and exclusively with Shabba-Doo. Here she learnt the complete repertoire of Shway-Style and Shway Theory (which incorporates many concepts that can support the development of street dancers of any discipline).
Corina makes a triumphant return to her beloved home, London as a fully certified Shway Instructor with comprehensive, practical knowledge, complete with a set of enhanced skills and a keen, universal understanding of its essence as well as the artistry of the dance form.
She has danced in and managed a number of amateur and semi‐professional dance crews. While performing she represented the UK in the World Hip Hop International Championships in Las Vegas, USA – after winning the coveted 2nd place in the UK finals with Toyboxx Dance Company.
Corina is also the creator of Spread Love Dance, an organisation that aims to raise the bar in street dance knowledge, education, and training for UK dancers/teachers while sharing the culture and social essence of these dance styles and empowering youth with the freedom of self-expression.
Furthermore she is the creator of eLleM – an intuitive concept through which she educates youth and young women about self-empowerment.
A qualified fitness and dance instructor with YMCAfit and a youth project worker, Corina has taught and worked with many young people and adults, helping them to develop confidence and life skills.
In addition, Corina is a highly skilled and resourceful marketer and event manager. Short-listed for a Government Business Award, she was highly commended for an innovative social marketing campaign. Corina also led a team of young researchers who subsequently made it to the finals of The Young People of the Year Awards 2011 (YOPEY) for an outstanding piece of research looking at negative media stereotyping of youth. She has a depth and breadth of knowledge and experience in the dance, youth, sports development, and education sectors. Social marketing (changing human behaviour for social good) and research are key areas of her expertise.
